Google DeepMind consolidates AI research divisions of Google

Google is consolidating its AI divisions as it tries to keep up with other tech giants in AI.

Google DeepMind was announced today by Google. It is a new unit that combines the DeepMind team with the Google Brain team at Google Research. Demis Hassabis, DeepMind’s co-founder and chief executive officer, wrote in a blog that Google DeepMind would work \”in close cooperation… across the Google product areas,\” to \”deliver AI products and research.\”

Google DeepMind will create a scientific board that will oversee the research and direction of the unit. The board, led by Koray Kvukcuoglu (VP of DeepMind research), is part of Google’s announcement. Eli Collins, the VP of Product at Google Research will join Google DeepMind in the role of VP for product. Google Brain leader Zoubin Ghahramani, who reports to Kavukcuoglu, will be a part of Google DeepMind’s research leadership team.
