Intelligence has so far been the domain only of living organisms. Could intelligence be brought to inanimate objects and used for information processing? What could we expect from this approach? Could we create more efficient computers? What are the implications for technology and society?

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands is supporting this event. The Netherlands and United Kingdom have a long tradition of collaboration and scientific exchange. The Netherlands cherishes and encourages these excellent relationships, especially at a time when complex societal issues are no longer contained by borders or even the distance of water that separates us as North Sea Neighbours. These challenges require international collaboration and an ongoing exchange of ideas in science.

This event took place at the Ri on October 3, 2022.

Wilfred van der Wiel, born in Gouda (The Netherlands), is a full professor of Nanoelectronics at the University of Twente. He also directs the BRAINS Centre for Brain-Inspired Nano Systems. He is also a professor at the Institute of Physics of the Westfalische Wilhems University Munster in Germany. His research is focused on unconventional electronic for efficient information processing.
