DeepMind AI discovers new way to multiply and speed up computers

Artificial intelligence developed by DeepMind discovered a new method of multiplying numbers. This is the first breakthrough in this area for over 50 years. This discovery could increase some computation speeds up to 20%, since a variety of software depends on performing the task in large scales.

Matrix Multiplication, where two grids are multiplied, is a basic computing task that’s used by virtually all software, but especially in graphics, AI, and scientific simulations. Even small improvements in the efficiency could result in significant performance gains or energy savings.
