Scientists say they’re now actively trying to build conscious robots

Chatbots and image generators are not the end of robotics for some leaders in the industry. What’s next? Consciousness.

Hod Lipson is the Columbia University mechanical engineer who runs the Creative Machines Lab. He told The New York Times that this topic was taboo. We were almost forbidden to talk about it – ‘Don’t mention the c word; you will not get tenure’ – so I initially had to disguise it as something else.

Artificial intelligence has been divided over the question of consciousness for many years. While to some, this is science fiction, as it has been in countless sci fi books, films, and comics — but to Lipson and others, it’s an objective that will change the human experience forever.
