Robotics to the Rescue: Automating Restroom Cleaning in Convenience Stores

Automated system for cleaning restrooms at convenience stores
Researchers from Tokyo Metropolitan University created a robot system that can automate the cleaning in public restrooms and convenience stores. This system will compete in the Future Convenience Store Challenge at the World Robot Summit, a competition to find the most advanced technologies for automating convenience stores. It was first published in Advanced Robotics.

Kazuyoshi wada, a researcher who developed the system told TechXplore that many convenience stores offer restrooms to their customers. Cleaning the restrooms is an important part of business. While restroom cleaning is essential for sanitary reasons, it requires mental and physical work. The clerks at convenience stores are not the best people to clean toilets. It is also difficult to maintain cleanliness standards because different clerks have different ideas about cleanliness.

The WRS created the FCSC Competition to encourage the development and implementation of new technologies which could improve efficiency in convenience stores. Robotic systems capable of cleaning toilets and restrooms on their own could improve hygiene and simplify the work for shop clerks and convenience stores cleaners.
