Pinocchio Gains Consciousness: Autonomous Walking Enabled by Smart Microrobots

Microrobots that walk on their own

The solar-powered microbots have been upgraded to include their own miniature computer. They can now walk independently and without external control.

Cornell researchers, along with others, had developed previously microscopic machines that could crawl, walk, swim and fold up. These machines always required \”strings\”. To generate motion, wires were needed to supply electrical current or laser beams were focused on specific parts of the robots.

Itai Cohen – Professor of Physics at Cornell University – explained that before, the robot would only respond if we manipulated these \”strings\”. Now that these brains are on board, it is like removing the marionette’s strings. It’s when Pinocchio becomes conscious.\”
