Open-access multilingual AI
Freely available, a new language model that is similar to GPT-3 in scale could help to democratise AI.
BLOOM, which stands for BigScience Open-science Multilingual Language Model, was developed by over 1,000 researchers from more than 250 institutions in 70 countries, with the support of philosophers, legal experts and ethicists. This collaboration, called BigScience, brought together ethical, philosophical and legal experts. The French government funded the project coordinated by New York startup Hugging Face.
It took over a year to plan and train the new AI, including a final run lasting 117 days (11thMarch – 6thJuly) on the Jean Zay supercomputer, located south of Paris in France.
