Combining Sea Drones and AI to Police the Gulf Region: The Pentagon’s Pioneering Program

Pentagon combines sea drones, AI to police Gulf region

The recent seizure by Iran of US Navy unmanned boats shed light on an innovative Pentagon program that aims to create networks of air, underwater and surface drones capable of patrolling large areas, combining their surveillance with artificial Intelligence.

The program, which has been running for a year, operates a number of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) in the waters surrounding the Arabian Peninsula, collecting data and images that are then sent back to the Gulf collection centers.

The program was running smoothly until Iranian forces attempted to seize three Saildrone Explorer USVs measuring seven meters in length, in two separate incidents on August 29-30th and September 1st.
