A novel AI algorithm could be the key to a breakthrough in epilepsy treatments
Scientists from University College London have developed an algorithm that uses artificial intelligence to detect focal cortical dysfunction (FCD), which is a subtle brain anomaly that causes epileptic seizures. Scientists can now detect and cure epilepsy at its earliest stages.
The Multicentre epilepsy lesion detection project (MELD), which developed the algorithm, gathered over 1,000 MRI scans of patients from 22 international epilepsy centres. It reports anomalies in cases where focal cortical dysfunction (FCD), a leading cause of epilepsy, is drug-resistant.
