AI & Robotics: The Future of Space Exploration
Space exploration is adopting Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, just like many other industries. It takes us to places we have never been before. AI and robotics can be embraced by organizations that work in space programs through emerging technologies such as machine learning and deep-learning. Robots are used to aid in the exploration of space through mechanical design, such as planetary rovers and space manipulators. They also help with actuators and sensors, tools and end-effectors for space robots. Here are a few examples of how robotics and AI have been used in space technology.
1. Canadian Space Association has launched Dextre. This robotic arm is designed to replace small items such as exterior cameras and the 100-kg battery used on the Space Station. It can also be used to test robotics and new tools.
2. Voyager 1 & Voyager 2 were created to study Jupiter & Saturn in detail, including Saturn’s rings and the largest moons of Jupiter / Saturn. The Deep Space Network is still used to communicate information between these robots. They are currently closer to Pluto than Earth or the Sun.
