Thin-Format Computer Vision Sensors Based on Micro Lens Arrays (MLA)

A thin sensor based on the micro lens array (MLA).

Recent technological advancements have allowed the creation of sensors with ever-increasing precision. They can track movement and changes in real environments. Engineers are working on making these sensors smaller so they can be embedded into a variety devices, such as robotic limbs or wearable devices.

Researchers from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology developed a thin sensor based on the micro lens array. MLAs consist of 1D or 2-D arrays that are composed of several small lenses. They are usually arranged in hexagonal or square patterns.

TechXplore reported that \”in this study we combined an older technology, a Micro Lens array, with vision based tactile sensors.\” Xia CHEN, one of researchers who conducted the study, said. This work builds on previous work that used pinhole arrays for image capture. We wanted to create a vision-based, thin-format tactile sensor because few studies have focused on changing the image system of vison based tactile sensors.
