The Magic of Marvel: FAIRY – Flying Aero-robots Powered by Wind and Light

Magical Marvel: Tiny Fairy Robot Flying by Wind and Light

Pollinators such as bees are disappearing, and this is a major challenge to global biodiversity. It also affects humans by creating problems with food production. Researchers at Tampere University have developed the world’s first passively-flying robot with artificial muscles. Can this artificial fairy be used in pollination?

The development of stimuli responsive polymers has opened up a wide range of possibilities for the next generation of small, wirelessly controlled robots with soft bodies. Engineers have been using these materials for some time to create small robots capable of walking, swimming and jumping. No one has yet been able make them fly.

Researchers at Tampere University’s Light Robots Group are researching the possibility of making smart materials fly. Hao Zeng – Academy Research Fellow, group leader and Jianfeng Ying – doctoral researcher have developed a new design to their project FAIRY, Flying Aero Robots Based on Light Responsive Materials Assembly. They developed a polymer assembly robot that is controlled by the light and flies with wind.
