An autonomous robot will allow astronauts to perform surgery on the ISS

The miniaturized, autonomous robot can mimic the movements of a surgeon in space.

MIRA is short for Miniaturized In Vivo Robot Assistant.

A miniaturized, autonomous robot will soon be able to perform tasks that simulate movements used during surgery without the assistance of astronauts or doctors.

MIRA is short for miniaturized, in-vivo robotic assistance. The surgical robot, invented by Nebraska Engineering professor Shane Farritor is currently being prepared for a test mission on the International Space Station in 2024. NASA awarded $100,000 to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for this project through the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research at the University of Nebraska Omaha.
