Robotic Heart to Replace Human Transplants: A Promising Solution for Heart Disease

In the future, a robotic heart will replace human transplants.

Scientists aim to eliminate the need for heart transplants in humans by 2028. Researchers in the UK and Netherlands are working on a soft, pliable robot heart. It can pump blood throughout the circulatory system. The first working prototype should be ready to implant into animals in 3 years and humans in 8 years. It is one of only four projects to make it onto the shortlist in the Big Beat Challenge, a prize worth PS30 million for a therapy which can revolutionize the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Other projects include genetic therapy for heart defects and a vaccine to prevent heart disease. Wearable technology is also being developed for the early detection of strokes and heart attacks.

Need for a new septic system

In the UK, there are approximately 7 million heart and circulatory problems. Of these, over 150,000 patients die each year. Around 200 heart transplants are performed in the UK each year, but 20 patients die while waiting. It is particularly true for babies who were born with defective hearts and need heart transplants from deceased babies. Even after a successful heart transplant, immunosuppressive medications must be taken and are often used for life to prevent immune rejection. The risk of infection and other complications is higher.
