The Robotic Armband is a Promising Tool for Dexterity
AZoRobotics talks with Dr. Erik Enegberg of Florida Atlantic University to learn about his research on a wearable robotic armband. This device could change the lives of prosthetic hand users who long desired to improve their dexterity.
Prosthetic users have not been able to do simple tasks like typing on a keyboard or pressing buttons on remote controls. They also cannot braid a child’s long hair. What is the impact of losing tactile sensations on limb-absent individuals’ lives?
The loss of the sense of touch can have a profound effect on a person’s life. Even simple things, like stroking a pet’s fur or the skin on a loved one can be a powerful way to communicate with others. A patient who has had a bilateral amputation expressed concern that he could hurt his granddaughter if he squeezed her hand too hard, as he no longer has tactile sense.
