Navigating the New and Weird World of Human-Robot Interaction

Harmonizing human-robot interaction for a \”new and strange\” world of work

It has always been a challenge for robots to interact with humans and vice-versa. Two of the most innovative people working to improve this relationship have joined us at TC Sessions: Robotics. They will be discussing the future and present of human-robot interactions: Clara Vu, co-founder of Veo Robotics and Rod Brooks, founder of Robust.ai (formerly from iRobot or Rethink Robotics).

HRI is a challenge because, although we have highly capable robotic systems, their environments are still narrowly defined. Clara stated that we are adding new capabilities and levels of complexity as we move away from \”automation\” to autonomy (a term she said she did not invent).

She said, \”We are moving away from robotic systems which do what they’re told or can perceive something very specific and very low-level to systems with a bit more autonomy.\” The system that my firm builds was not possible five years ago because the sensors and processors we use to crunch the data didn’t exist. As we have more sensors and processing power, we can, as you mentioned, better understand the world in which we live and move robotic performance to a higher level.
