Harnessing the Power of a Human-AI Team: Achieving Superhuman Decision Making Through Centaur Chess

Artificial intelligence can help to overcome human limitations, resulting in better decisions

Artificial intelligence can make modern life a confusing experience. Think of miscommunications with chatbots in customer service or the algorithmically placed hair metal on your Spotify playlist. Mustafa Mert Celikok says that these AI systems cannot effectively interact with humans because they don’t understand how people can act in irrational and unpredictable ways. He is a Ph.D. candidate studying human-AI interactions with the goal of combining the strengths and weakness of both sides into a superior decision maker.

A \”centaur\” is an example of a hybrid in the AI world. It’s not the mythological horse-human but rather a team made up of humans and AI. Centaurs first appeared in chess during the late 1990s when artificial intelligence systems were advanced enough to defeat human champions. Centaur chess, or cyborg-chess, is a matchup between a computer program and a human player on either side.

Celikok says, \”This is Formula 1 chess.\” \”Grandmasters were defeated. Super AIs were defeated. Grandmasters who played with powerful AIs also lost. It turns out that novice players are most successful when paired with AIs. Celikok says that \”novices have fewer strong opinions and can make effective decisions with their AI partners.\” Grandmasters, on the other hand, \”think they know more than AIs\” and often override their AIs when they disagree.
