David Weinberger is our guest this week. He has lectured at Harvard and worked as a senior researcher and fellow at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society. David Weinberger released his new book Everyday Chaos, Technology, Complexity and How We’re Surviving in a World of Possibility, just before covid. David and I discuss some of the main ideas that he emphasized in Everyday Chaos. It is important to examine how we have used reductionist thinking in the past to generalize about society, technology, and products. The latest technologies, such as the internet and Machine Learning, are showing us how much better we can do when we embrace chaos. It means exploring the options and letting data and individuals tell us what they want, rather than trying to predict or shape outcomes in advance.
