Is diversity key to collaboration? New AI research suggests that it is.
In a cooperative game a new training method could produce artificial intelligence that adapts itself to different play styles. This could be a big win for human and AI teaming.
Many see the next frontier as teaming intelligence, as artificial intelligence improves at tasks that were once only in humans’ hands, such driving cars. In the future, AI and humans will be true partners for high-stakes tasks, like performing complex surgeries or defending against missiles. Before teaming intelligence takes off, researchers need to overcome a problem which corrodes collaboration: humans do not always like or trust AI partners.
New research shows that diversity is a crucial factor in making AI an effective team player.
