Declining Disruptive Innovations in Science and Technology: A Challenge for Growth and Sustainability

Where are all the scientific breakthroughs? A major study says that science and technology have slowed down, despite advances in AI, nuclear fusion, mRNA vaccines, and other technologies.

According to a recent study in Nature, despite the rapid growth in AI, medicine, and nuclear energy, major technological advances are decreasing and becoming fewer in number.

Researchers analyzed 45 million scientific articles and 3.9 millions patents from 1945 to 2010, looking at networks of citations in order to determine whether breakthroughs confirmed the status quo, or disrupted knowledge and more significantly pushed science and tech off into new directions.

Researchers found that these major disruptions have become less frequent since 1945 in all major scientific fields and technologies. The discovery of the double-helix structure of the DNA, which rendered previous research obsolete, was a great example.
