Navigating the Turing Trap: The Promise & Peril of Human-Like Artificial Intelligence

The Turing Trap – The Promise and Peril of Human Like Artificial Intelligence

It is a way to achieve unprecedented wealth, increased leisure and robust intelligence. On the other hand, it can lead to a better understanding ourselves. If HLAI is used to automate human labor rather than enhance it, then wealth and power will be concentrated. With that concentration, comes the danger of being stuck in an equilibrium with no way for those without power to improve their outcome. I call this the Turing Trap.

The great challenge for the future will be to take advantage of AI’s unprecedented benefits, including human-like manifestations of AI, while avoiding Turing Trap. This task will require an understanding of the impact of technological progress on productivity and inequality. It also requires a vision for how we can improve.
