In a classic computer, data can be stored and processed as bits. These are represented by a zero or one. In quantum computers, however, qubits are not limited to a state of zero or one, but can also be superimposed with both. The more qubits there are, the greater the computing power and possibilities. IBM’s quantum computing journey began with a cloud-based 5-qubit quantum machine called Quantum Experience, which led to the Eagle chip in 2016. The company has since released chips with an increasing number of qubits. Each chip is named after a bird and each one poses its own technological challenges.
