Google Maps takes on Apple’s 3D view with a new \”immersive\” view for cities
Google announced at an event today in Paris that it is launching updates to Maps as part of its strategy to make the navigation application more intuitive and immersive for users.
The company has announced that Immersive View will be available in London, Los Angeles and New York starting today. San Francisco, San Francisco, Tokyo, and San Francisco are also included. Google announced Immersive View at I/O 2022. It is designed to give you a better understanding of the city you are visiting before you arrive. In the next few months, Immersive View will be launched in other cities including Amsterdam, Dublin and Florence.
This feature merges billions of Street View images and aerial photos to create a digital world model. The feature also overlays information such as weather details, traffic, and how busy an area may be. Imagine you want to know more about the Rijksmuseum before you visit. Immersive View allows you to fly over the building and see how it looks. You can see how the area will look at different times during the day, and the weather. Immersive View will also allow you to view nearby restaurants and see what they look like inside.
Google explained this in a blog. \”To create these real-life scenes we use neural-radiance fields, an advanced AI technique that transforms pictures into 3D representations,\” Google said. With NeRF, you can recreate the entire context of a location, including the lighting, texture, and background. This allows you to determine if a moody bar lighting will be the perfect atmosphere for a romantic date or if the view at a café is ideal for a lunch with friends.
In the next few months, Google and Apple will be releasing a feature called \”glanceable direction\” on Android and iOS. This feature allows you to track your trip right from the route overview screen or lockscreen. Users can see the latest ETAs as well as where you need to turn next. The app will automatically update your route if you choose to change directions. Google says that this information used to only be visible when you opened the app, unlocked your phone and switched on comprehensive navigation mode. You can use the app to get glanceable directions whether you are walking, cycling or taking public transport.
