National Grid UK launches drone test to automate asset inspections
The UK’s National Grid Electricity Transmission is conducting trials using autonomous drones to automate the inspection of transmission pylons for corrosion.
NGET has 21,900 steel lattice-pylons which carry overhead conductor wires. The condition of transmission pylons can deteriorate due to corrosion. Periodic assessments are performed in order to assess the health and safety of the network. NGET inspects approximately 3,650 steel lattice-pylons every year. Helicopters and drones are used to capture high definition, still color images.
