Harry’s Review Of The Mountain In The Sea By Ray Nayler

The Mountain In The Sea, a sci-fi thriller by Ray Nayler that is contemplative and reflective, offers a story of first contact which reflects our ideas about intelligence and responsibility.

The Mountain In The Sea, a film by Dr. Ha Nguyen about the discovery of octopus in the Con Dao Archipelago of remote Vietnamese islands, is based on the ecologist’s findings. There are many questions: how intelligent are the octopuses in question? Both corporations and activists are interested. DIANIMA, a large organisation interested in artificial intelligence and automation, hired Dr Nguyen for the purpose of determining how valuable octopus are to their research. DIANIMA, which has previously attempted to create a silicon-based lifeform that could pass the Turing Test, is accompanying Dr Nguyen for this job.
